  • On a private mountain above Watauga Lake

High atop the mountain with long range mountain views, here at the Lodge on Iron Mountain you are surrounded only by the sounds of nature: wind in the trees, birds chattering, leaves and acorns falling, or gently drifting snow. In every season a reason to visit.
Natural D-logs make for a cool home in the summer and warmed by the sun in the winter. Also a log burning fireplace for cozy winter visits. Lots of wood alongside the outhouse, but you might have to split some....

3 king bedrooms each with private tiled baths with jetted tubs and 2 have steam showers. One queen bedroom. 3 rooms have private balconies overlooking the mountains. 8 guests are the maximum as we don't have sleep sofas or pull out beds. Infants and children count as guests although...one additional infant in a pack and play is ok in the Equestrian Room.

Unique Features

This mountain getaway sits 2 miles below the Iron Mountain section of the Appalachian Trail and there is a trail going to the AT. Just down the road is Watauga Lake with fishing, swimming, boating and there is a delightful trail along the shore.

There is a small park with slides and walking trail in Butler, but up in Ralph Stout Park in Mountain City is a fabulous kiddle park with a skate park, a long walking trail and the best jungle gyms around! My 3 year old granddaughter had a ball! There is also Sycamore Shoals State park with a walking trail along the river. A small museum and movie are worth a stop too.

WE have a 2 mile hiking trail right out the back door as a warm up to hiking up to the AT.

ATV trails just up the road at Doe Mountain with over 50 miles of mountain trails. Also horseback riding, mountain biking and a fire tower to climb. From the top you can see 3 states; Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina.

Things To Do

Being in the Tri-State area of Southwest Virginia, Northeast Tennessee and Northwest North Carolina; the adventure list is long. Since you book directly with us, we can help point your “Southern Appalachian Mountain explorers-compass” in the direction that you want. Hike our section of the Appalachian Trail (which runs over 2100 miles from Georgia to Maine), or in the Cherokee National Forest. Need something faster-paced? Do some motorcycle riding, mountain biking, boating, ATV Riding and more.

We can suggest places for waterskiing, golfing, whitewater rafting, swimming & cliff jumping, and waterfalls to explore. Let us know what type of outdoor fun your group enjoys.

Nearby towns and regions are full of shopping and historic treasures: The Butler Museum tells the history of Watauga Lake; drive through the world’s shortest tunnel, Backbone Rock; see the Blue Ridge Mountains or head to the race at Bristol Motor Speedway and the Birthplace of Country Music Museum also in Bristol. While you are there....stand in two states at the same time as you do like the GEICO gecko did and straddle the state line.

Live professional theater at Barter Theater - this year they are performing at the Moonlite Drive In.

About the Owner/Manager

Iron Mountain Inn opened its doors to guests in May 1998. Now, 23 years since I first visited the area, we have made many friends and are looking forward to sharing the magic of the mountains with you.

I designed and had the Lodge built which meant I could add little touches I like to the rooms. Such as, the light over the shower is at the end of the tub since I like to read in the tub. The decks surrounding the Inn are wide since I like to have lots of space between chairs. And the kitchen is the hub of the Lodge where everyone congregates.
The formal dining room makes for lively discussions and the small night club piano accompanies sing-a-longs. Memories are made around meals.

Lots of games, books and memorabilia can keep everyone busy even on rainy days. I'm always available night and day if there are problems, but hopefully your tay with be problem free.....so far all have been!
